Green Lipped Mussel Asthma Research
Green Lipped Mussel Asthma Research Findings that prove natural treatments work
As it has already been established by modern medicine, the hidden culprit behind almost all of the chronic diseases is inflammation. If you look up the word “inflammation” in Wikipedia then you get this definition “Inflammation (Latin, inflammare, to set on fire) is part of the complex biological response of vascular tissues to harmful stimuli, such as pathogens, damaged cells, or irritants.Inflammation is a protective attempt by the organism to remove the injurious stimuli and to initiate the healing process.”
So, what does this mean? Simply that inflammation is a means of defence of your body against anything that it considers harmful.
One of the most well known inflammation related chronic diseases is asthma. This is a disease that according to the online medical portal WebMD currently afflicts about 22 million people in the United States alone. On a worldwide scale, this number is estimated to be around 300 million (according to the Global Asthma Burden Report, 2009).
According to WebMD, asthma is “a chronic disease of the airways that makes breathing difficult”. When a person suffering from asthma is having an attack triggered by allergies or environmental factors, there is inflammation of the air passages that results in a temporary narrowing of the airways that carry oxygen to the lungs. If left untreated for prolonged period of time, these asthma attacks might lead to a permanent damage of the lungs.
Of course, there is whole body of online and offline literature which covers in a lot of detail all the information that an asthma sufferer needs to know in order to fight the symptoms and the discomfort that this disease is causing and my intention is not to present this information in this article. What I want to do, however, is to indicate to you the link between green lipped mussel and asthma and why you should consider green lipped mussel supplementation in your search for a natural treatment for this disease.
As already discussed on this website, there is ample medical evidence that shows this type of shellfish contains a wide range of nutrients that are very effective at combating inflammation.
Green Lipped Mussel Asthma Research Findings
In the case of asthma, findings from a double blinded clinical trial related to green lipped mussel and asthma were published in the European Respiratory Journal. The report was titled “Treatment of asthma with lipid extract of New Zealand green-lipped mussel: a randomised clinical trial” and involved 46 patients with atopic asthma. These were split into two groups; One group was treated with a daily dose of two capsules of green lipped extract, while the other was given a placebo. The whole trial lasted for 8 weeks.
At the end of the trial, it was recorded that there was a significant decrease of symptoms related to asthma (daytime wheeze, concentration of exhaled H2O2 and an increase in morning PEF) in the group that received the green lipped mussel extract compared with the placebo group. There were no reported significant side effects whatsoever.
As a conclusion, the authors of the report stated that regular intake of green lipped mussel extract can have beneficial effects on patients with asthma.
Therefore, if you or your loved ones suffer from asthma, then I would urge you to consider including a green lipped mussel asthma extract in your natural treatment.
