Omega 6 to omega 3 Ratio

Why the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio is crucial to your health

omega 6 to omega 3 ratioIf you live in the Western world, then chances are that your diet is deficient in the right fats. The sad truth is that this problem is not an isolated situation and you are not alone on this, it is widespread in almost all over the world.

There are a lot of factors which contribute to this reality. One of the most important root causes is the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio. The fact is, that while omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids are so crucial for the smooth functioning of every organ in our body, especially our heart and brain, the levels of omega 3s in our everyday diet keeps getting lower and lower.

The secret to optimum health is in the balanced diet

What does this mean? Simply that we often end up with a diet which is characterized by a high omega 6 to omega 3 ratio. And this fact is one of the leading triggers of the onset of inflammation; the underlying biochemical process which is the root cause of many chronic diseases, such as arthritis, asthma, heart disease just to name a few.

Our diet wasn’t always like this. In the old days, our daily food consisted of ample quantities of omega 3s, derived from the meat and fish that we ate. But, the situation has changed dramatically now. Owing to the proliferation of pollution and the change in the foods that fish and animals consume due to new agricultural methods that have been introduced for the worse, our food sources are deficient in this precious essential fatty acid.

It is an established fact that over the last three quarters of a century, the levels of omega 6s in our diet have skyrocketed. Nowadays, the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio is 20:1 while in the past it used to be not higher than roughly 2:1.

As mentioned above, this all started when animals have been switched from a diet that was basically grass based to grain based. Due to this change, their ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 soared, thus affecting our ratio as well when we eat them.

The same happened with fish. While in the past fish lived in their natural habitat relying on a natural diet, now they are grown in fish farms, being fed with “fish flakes”, high in omega 6 and deficient in omega 3s.

This is where the big misconception about the causes of modern heart disease originates from. Because of the fact that, due to their unbalanced diets, animals have high ratios of omega 6s to omega 3s, red meat is being blamed for causing heart diseases. However, at the same time, the contemporary medical community dismisses the fact that in other areas of the world where cattle are still being fed with grass, there is not a single occurrence of heart disease!

So, what is the basic conclusion? As is the case in all things in nature, maintaining balance in our dietary preferences is the secret to well being and health.

Action to take

Having said the above, it is obvious that we cannot fully rely on our diet alone to obtain the optimum omega 6 to omega 3 ratio. Therefore, the only viable solution is to seek to fulfil this nutritional need through natural supplementation.

One type of natural supplements that are rich not only in omega 3s but also in a host of other nutritional ingredients, are those that are based on green lipped mussels.
